We would like to inform our IronKey partners about recent widespread reports of serious security vulnerabilities and hacking into supposedly "secure" portable storage devices. These devices are in use today by companies and government agencies, and are trusted to protect millions of gigabytes of sensitive information. Many of the affected devices have received the prestigious FIPS 140-2 Level 2 security validation, allowing these devices to be used by government agencies and the military.
IronKey security researchers have analyzed the vulnerabilities and research reports, and IronKey customers are safe.
The security flaw allows anyone with a simple unlocker tool to unlock many hardware-encrypted devices from SanDisk, Kingston Technologies, and Verbatim - without knowing a user's password. This incident illustrates that securing portable storage devices requires deep architectural understanding, threat modeling, security review, and attention to detail in implementation.
We know that worldwide, companies and government agencies rely upon these supposedly "secure" portable storage devices to protect gigabytes of sensitive, valuable information. Upon analysis of the vulnerabilities and research reports by IronKey security researchers, we want to assure you that as an IronKey partner, the security of your customers' IronKey devices has not been impacted by this recent vulnerability disclosure - and the data remains safe.
IronKey products employ a sophisticated security architecture to protect the encrypted data. IronKey S200 and D200 products are validated to FIPS 140-2 Level 3, a far higher standard of FIPS 140-2 level 2 than the products affected by this hack. Level 3 mandates higher requirements for encryption key management, authentication, design assurance, and physical security.
